Establishing Clear Guiding Principles for Assessments

Using the following guidelines to write assessment items helps to ensure that. Student’s response on an item provides evidence from which an inference about the underlying construct can be made. You want to be sure that if a student gets an item wrong, it is because they lack the level of skill or knowledge necessary to answer the item correctly, not because they could not understand that they were meant to do or because they were tricked into an incorrect response by the nature of the question.
