Identify the need


Every design process must begin with a design problem. It is the design problem that defines the contributing factors of the design need and therefore the product design factors that can lead to a potential design solution.

The design need can come from several sources; the designer who identifies a problem in an existing design a client, a person or group that contracts the designer to design a product to bridge the gap in a new or existing market or the identified users / audience of the potential design solution who identify problems / gaps in the current design range.

Independant of where the design need comes from, it it ultimatately the designer's job to flesh out the design specifications. This can be done in several ways:
