Files are typically made from forged steel. The steel generally contains 1.25 to 1.5% carbon. After forging, the blanks are machine straightened, ground and the teeth cut.

File sizes range between manufactures. Common sizes include 150, 200 and 250mm. The length of a file is measured from the shoulder to the point or end of the file.
