Scribes are pencil size lengths of hardened steel that have a thicker central diameter that tapers out to a point at either end. One end is usually bent to form a 90 degree straight hook at one end.
Scribes are used to mark sharp, clear lines on metal surfaces when assisted by a steel rule or engineer's square. The sharpened ends are hardened and ground to a fine point.
